National and University Library

Ljubljana

2012_international competition_3h

The library is lying on a corner-parcel of a mid-high living block, above the ruins of an ancient roman town, and it’s positioned towards the castle of Ljubljana. The most important feature of the library is the sensation of being surrounded by books. While digital media is gaining more significance in information transfer today, books are still the physical representations of the knowledge of a community. The main reading hall has a large space, each wall covered by books. It is penetrated by light and air, but the atmosphere of the mass of the books is overwhelming.
